Gut content analysis of Oreochromis niloticus from the Nyanza Gulf, Lake Victoria showed that the bulk of the food items ingested constituted bottom deposits and blue green algae. Among the live food items ingested, blue green algae (Cyanophyceae) constituted 53.6%, the diatoms (Bacillariophyaceae) 19.7%, aquatic invertebrates (mainly Copepoda, Cladocera, and Rotifera) 12.9%, desmids (Desmidaceae) 7.7% and lastly the green algae (Chlorophyceae) 6.2%. The most preferred food items were: Spirulina laxisma and Nitzschia accicularis. The least preferred food items were: Lyngbya circumcreta, Microcystis aeruginosa and Pediastrum simplex. Dominance of introduced Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.) in Lake Victoria: A case of changing biology and ecosystem OceanDocs

Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus together with other tilapiines of Oreochromis leucosticus, Tilapia zillii and Sarotherodon melanopleudra (=T. rendalii) were introduced into Lake Victoria (Kenya) between 1951 and 1962 to boost the then declining fishery. Only O. niloticus was able to establish leading further to reduction in endemic tilapiines of Oreochromis variabilis and Oreochromis esculentus. O. niloticus currently forms the third commercially important species after introduced Nile perch, Lates niloticus and a native cyprinid Rastrineobola argentea, whereas other tilapias are extinct or are occasionally caught in the lake. Mortality rate, exploitation and recruitment in Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus) in Nyanza Gulf of Lake Victoria, Kenya OceanDocs

An analysis was done on length frequency data to study mortality, exploitation rate and recruitment in Oreochromis niloticus in Nyanza Gulf, Lake Victoria. The fishing mortality (F) and natural mortality (M) were 0.468 y super(-1) and 2.0 y super(-1) respectively. The exploitation rate was 57.2%. Yield per recruit under the fishing regime was 250 g. Its predicted value at maximum sustained yield was 530 g, which could be obtained at a fishing mortality of 1.5 y super(-1). The recommended value was 500 g to be obtained at a fishing mortality of 1.0 y super(-1). The maximum biomass per recruit (B/R) was 1132.48 g while the optimum was 1068.38 g.
